FUNCTION PRINCIPLE

Operation Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer ELEMENTRAC CS-d

The ELEMENTRAC CS-d utilizes two different furnaces (resistance and induction) which share one detection unit consisting of up to four independent IR cells. Inorganic samples like steel, cast iron, cement are usually processed in the induction furnace of the CS-d. After applying the sample to a ceramic crucible, it is logged in the ELEMENTS software with name and weight. This is followed by adding accelerators like iron and tungsten. The ceramic crucible with sample and accelerator is placed on the pedestal and the measurement is started in the software. All further steps are controlled by the ELEMENTS software; the measured carbon and/or sulfur result is displayed after approx. 50 seconds. One or multiple results can be exported to LIMS or to a report.

Organic samples are usually processed in the resistance furnaces of the CS-d at a defined temperature up to 1,550 C. The samples (such as coal) are weighed in ceramic boats without accelerator. The weight is transferred from the interfaced balance to the PC or can be entered manually. The sample is then placed directly on the balcony in front of the furnace and the measurement can be started. A green LED light indicates when the analyzer is ready for measurement and the ceramic boat with the sample can be introduced into the hot furnace with the help of a stick. The typical analysis time is 60 to 180 seconds, depending on the sample material.

Measuring principle Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer ELEMENTRAC CS-d

Regardless of which furnace is used in the ELEMENTRAC CS-d, the carbon and sulfur in the sample forms gaseous molecules like SO2 and CO2 during combustion. The released amounts of CO2 and SO2 are measured in up to 4 element-selective infrared cells. Usually, two IR cells are used for measuring one gas (CO2 or SO2) to ensure that both very low and very high concentrations are analyzed precise and correctly.

When the induction furnace of the CS-d is used, the carrier gas (oxygen) and the combustion products (CO2, traces of CO, and SO2) are first led through a metallic filter to remove all solid particles. Afterwards, a tube filled with magnesium perchlorate removes traces of water. The dried combustion gas then passes up to two infrared cells for sulfur (SO2) measurement. Afterwards, a heated catalyst (usually platinized silica) oxidizes the traces of carbon monoxide (CO) to CO2 and the SO2 molecules to SO3. The SO3 gas is absorbed by cellulose and the CO2 is measured in up to two element selective IR cells. Finally, the combustion gas is led to the exhaust and the ELEMENTS software calculates the resulting carbon and sulfur concentrations.

Whereas the induction furnace of the ELEMENTRAC CS-d is suitable for analyzing inorganic samples like steel, cast iron and ceramics, the resistance furnace is used for combustion of organic samples like coal, coke or soil. When a coal sample is combusted at temperatures of approx. 1350° C, CO2 and SO2 are released but usually no carbon monoxide (CO) is formed. The combustion gases of the resistance furnace first pass a ceramic filter for absorption of particles, followed by a glass tube with magnesium perchlorate.

After that the dried combustion gases pass the same path as those from the induction furnace. Usually, the catalyst furnace is switched off during usage of the resistance furnace because oxidation of CO is not required.

However, the risk of incomplete combustion and formation of carbon monoxide increases at lower temperatures (~600 °C); in such cases the catalyst furnace may be switched on.

FUNCTION PRINCIPLE

Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer CS-i: Operation

Operating the CS-i is simple and safe. After weighing the sample in a ceramic crucible, the weight is transferred from the interfaced balance to the PC. If required, sample weights can also be entered manually. Then an accelerator (such as iron or tungsten) is added and, after having placed the crucible on the pedestal, the analysis starts. The analysis time is 40 to 50 seconds. The detector signals and instrument parameters are displayed during analysis. Evaluation of the signals and display of the results are done automatically; the data can be transferred to a laboratory information management system (LIMS). The CS-i requires minimum maintenance. The particle filters and chemicals which need to be maintained are easily accessible.

Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer CS-i: Measuring Principle

In the induction furnace the sample is melted in a pure oxygen atmosphere, causing sulfur to react to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon to a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The combustion gases pass through a dust filter and moisture absorber for purification. In the next step the sulfur dioxide is detected in infrared cells. In the CS-i infrared cells with different sensitivities (high/low) can be adapted according to the user’s requirements. Oxidation of both, carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide follow the sulfur measurement. The SO3 gas is removed with cellulose wool; the carbon content is detected by infrared cells which can be individually customized. The ELTRA CS-i analyzer can be equipped with up to 4 independent infrared cells.

ELTRA CHS-580A analyzer is  ideal  for the simultaneous determination of carbon, hydogen and sulfur in organic samples.

ELTRA’s 580A analyzers (A = Autoloader) are equipped with an automatic sample loader, allowing for analysis of large numbers of samples without operator intervention. The sample loader is available in two versions to accommodate 36 or 130 crucibles. The CHS-580A is based on the technology of the CHS-580 analyzer and features a vertical resistance furnace with ceramic tube.

Operation Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer CS-580

After weighing the sample in a ceramic boat, the weight is transferred from the interfaced balance to the PC. If required, sample weights can also be entered manually. Then the ceramic boat is introduced into the furnace for combustion. The average analysis time is 60 to 120 seconds. The detector signals and instrument parameters are displayed during analysis. Evaluation of the signals and display of the results are done automatically; the data can be transferred to a laboratory information management system (LIMS). The CS-580 requires minimum maintenance. The particle filters and chemicals which need to be maintained are easily accessible.

Measuring Principle Carbon / Sulfur Analyzer CS-580

In the CS-580 the sample is burnt in an oxygen atmosphere at temperatures up to 1,550 °C. The furnace temperature can be freely selected in steps of 1 °C. The combustion gasses (CO2, H2O, SO2) coming from the furnace and pass through a dust filter. After the water vapor is chemically absorbed, the dried CO2 and SO2 gas is detected in the additional infrared cells. Depending on the configuration, it is possible to combine up to four (for C, S analyzers) infrared cells with different sensitivities.

Determination of released carbon dioxide and water is a special requirement for quality control in the cement and lime industry. ELTRA’s CW-800 analyzer is designed for the precise, simultaneous determination of carbon dioxide and water in lime, gypsum and cement from trace level up to 100 % (depending on sample weight). Other sample materials include ores, soil and minerals.

The CW-800 is equipped with a resistance furnace with quartz tube for sample oxidation and can provide temperatures up to 1000 °C. The temperature of the CW-800 can be set up in steps of 1 °C and the temperature is fixed during measurement. As common carrier gas in the CW-800 nitrogen is used.

The detection system of ELTRA’s CW-800 is very sensitive, reliable and guarantees a long lifetime. It can be customized according to the user’s requirements. Two infrared cells can be combined independently and allow highly precise measurement of CO2 and H2O.

FUNCTION PRINCIPLE

Operation of the CW-800 analyzer is simple and convenient. The temperature of the CW-800 is set up to defined temperature up to 1000 °C. After weighing the sample in a quartz boat, it is placed on the loading mechanism of the furnace. In the following, the analysis can be started and the boat is introduced into the furnace by the user. Depending on the applied temperature, residual or crystallization water and CO2 (from CaCO3) is released from the sample and determined by the infrared cells.

All data processing, control of the combustion process and calculating of the result is done by an external PC. The simultaneous determination of carbon dioxide and water only takes about 2 to 3 minutes.

Determination of surface carbon is a special requirement for quality control in the metal producing and metal working industry. ELTRA’s SurfaceC-800 analyzer is designed for the precise determination of surface carbon in numerous kinds of solid samples from trace level up to 1000 µg/cm2.

The SurfaceC-800 is equipped with a resistance furnace with quartz tube for sample oxidation and can provide temperatures up to 1000 °C. The temperature of the SurfaceC-800 can be set up in steps of 1 °C. As common carrier gas in the SurfaceC-800 oxygen is used.

The detection system of ELTRA’s SurfaceC-800 is very sensitive, reliable and guarantees a long lifetime. It can be customized according to the user’s requirements. It is possible to combine two infrared cells independently to allow for highly precise measurement of surface carbon from trace level up to large amounts.

FUNCTION PRINCIPLE

Operation of the SurfaceC-800 is simple and convenient. The temperature of the SurfaceC-800 is set up to defined temperature up to 1000 °C. After entering the sample surface size in the PC, the sample is placed in a quartz boat. In the following the analysis can be started and the sample boat is pushed from the open end of the combustion tube into the hot zone of the furnace.

The combustion gas is led through a copper oxide catalyst and the formed CO2 is determined by the infrared cells. All data processing, control of the combustion process and calculating of the result is done by an external PC. The COdetermination only takes about 60 up to 90 seconds.
